ARGUS — A Personal Control System
The Situation
Many automation platforms focus on devices rather than systems.
Lights, speakers, sensors, and switches can all be connected, but the result often becomes fragmented. Control surfaces multiply, automation rules become opaque, and the overall system becomes harder to understand over time.
ARGUS began as an exploration of a different approach:
what happens if automation is treated as a system design problem, not just a collection of connected devices?
The Approach
ARGUS is built around Home Assistant acting as a central orchestration layer.
Rather than automating everything immediately, the focus has been on creating a control system that remains clear and observable as it grows.
Key principles guiding the system include:
- clear dashboards for visibility and control
- automation introduced gradually and intentionally
- systems that remain understandable months after they are built
- integrations that simplify rather than fragment control
This approach treats the home environment as a small operational system — one that benefits from the same clarity and structure expected in organisational systems.
What Was Built
ARGUS currently integrates several components into a single environment:
- Home Assistant as the central automation platform
- custom dashboards designed for clarity and quick control
- Music Assistant for unified audio control
- Chromecast integration for media playback
- device monitoring and system status visibility
The goal is not maximum automation.
The goal is clarity of control.
Dashboards are designed so that the system state can be understood at a glance, and automations are introduced only where they genuinely remove friction.
What This Explores
ARGUS functions as a small-scale laboratory for ideas about systems design.
In particular it explores questions such as:
- How should dashboards represent system state clearly?
- When does automation reduce effort, and when does it obscure behaviour?
- How can integrations remain coherent as systems expand?
These are the same questions that appear in organisational systems — just in a much smaller environment.
Lessons
One of the most useful insights so far is simple:
A good automation system is not the one with the most automation.
It is the one that remains understandable to the person responsible for it.
As systems grow, clarity becomes more valuable than cleverness.
